Chapter 5 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
The Scotsman Steps
Built in 1899, and connecting the Old Town to the New Town, the Scotsman Steps bridge two periods in time; two different ways of life.
The stairway, with its distinctive wrought iron and glazed bricks, links North Bridge and the Scotsman Hotel with Market Street and Waverley train station below.
In 2011, the Scotsman Steps were restored to their former glory, and a new, permanent, public artwork was created by Scottish Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed. For his Work No.1059, commissioned by the Fruitmarket Gallery for the Edinburgh Art Festival, Creed clad each of the 104 steps in a different colour of marble from a different location around the world. So now, when you walk up or down the steps, you are also walking on a work of contemporary art.
The Scotsman Steps are open daily between 05:00 and 22:00.
