Chapter 1 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
The Signet Libary, Edinburgh, Scotland
The Signet Library is home to the Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet, a respected body of lawyers with over 500 years of history.
Still a working library, the impressive classical building is today a legal and cultural centre and a prestigious venue in the city. The Signet Library is an expression of the values and ideas of the Scottish Enlightenment period.
Parliament Square also houses Parliament Hall, the meeting place of the Parliament of Scotland between 1639 and 1707, and St Giles’ Cathedral, which was founded in the 12th century, and is the principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The Heart of Midlothian, a heart-shaped mosaic on the ground, marks the location of the Old Tolbooth – the former administrative centre of the city, and at one time the site of public executions. The Old Tolbooth forms the backdrop to Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Heart of Midlothian.
The Signet Library and its restaurant Colonnades are open to the public: Sunday – Friday 11:00 – 17:00.
Parliament Hall is open to the public: Monday – Thursday 09:00 – 17:00; Friday 09:00 – 16:45.
St Giles’ Cathedral: Monday – Saturday 09.00 – 17.00; Sunday 13.00-17.00. Admission is free, but the Cathedral is grateful for any donations.
