Chapter 8 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
38 Albany Street
Between 1818 and 1854, 38 Albany Street was occupied by members of the Ferrier family. In 1851, Susan Ferrier moved in to the house, after her health started to decline noticeably, and she lived there until her death on 5 November 1854.
Prior to her move, she lived on nearby Nelson Street, where she spent much of her time writing in darkened rooms due to the deterioration of her eyesight.
Albany Street has other literary connections, as it was also home to Mary Brunton, another successful 19th century novelist, and to James Ballantyne, Sir Walter Scott’s publisher.
