Chapter 11 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
Grassmarket
Today, the Grassmarket is home to a mixture of shops, hotels, bars and community organisations.
But as the name suggests, it was historically the city’s market for livestock and for many years it was also home to the city’s gallows.
The Grassmarket features in Walter Scott’s novels The Heart of Midlothian and Guy Mannering, in Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped.
Nearby, West Port and Candlemaker Row are home to many independent bookshops, including Armchair Books, Transreal Fiction, Peter Bell Books, Main Point Books and Edinburgh Books.
