Chapter 6 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
Waterloo Place Arch

General Register House – home to the National Archives of Scotland - is one of the oldest custom-built archive buildings in the world.

When the proposals were made for the construction of the New Town in 1752, creating a home for public records was a fundamental requirement, and the imposing classical building was completed in 1788.

As ScotlandsPeople Centre, it is the official government resource for family history research, providing access to Scottish births, deaths, marriage and census records.

Behind the building, you will find the Archivists’ Garden, home to 57 species of plants connected to Scotland’s history, be it through myth or association to famous Scottish figures.

The search rooms at General Register House are open between 09:00 and 16:30 from Monday to Friday, except for some public holidays. The Archivists’ Garden is open during office hours, and admission is free.
