Chapter 3 of Val McDermid's New Year's Resurrection
The Writers’ Museum

Lady Stair’s Close is steeped in centuries of history, and has a number of literary associations.

It is believed Susan Ferrier was born here in 1782, before moving to George Street in the New Town.

The Writers’ Museum, in historic Lady Stair’s House, commemorates three Scottish writers: Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. On display are Burns’ writing desk and the printing press on which Scott’s Waverley novels were first produced.

In the courtyard, you will find Makars’ Court, an evolving national literary monument of flagstones inscribed with the words of Scottish writers from the 14th century to the present day. To date, 41 makars (a Scots word meaning ‘one who fashions, constructs, produces, prepares, etc.’) are commemorated within the Court.

The Writers’ Museum is open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10:00 and 17:00, and on Sundays between 12:00 and 17:00.
