Alwyn Cashe was a 35-year-old soldier who literally walked through fire to save his comrades.
In 2005, Cashe was driving through Iraq in an infantry fighting vehicle when it was struck by an IED and burst into flames. Cashe helped his driver out of the burning vehicle, but in the process became soaked in diesel himself and caught fire. He already suffered severe burns, but then realized that 6 other soldiers and an interpreter were still trapped in the IFV. Again, he approached the burning vehicle, ignoring his pain, and rushed through the flames to rescue his wounded comrades. During the rescue, Cashe suffered second- and third-degree burns, a total of 72% of his body was burned. Nevertheless, his thoughts were only with his soldiers, and he refused to evacuate until all his comrades were taken care of.
One month later, Cashe succumbed to his severe burns in a military hospital. For his actions, he first received the Silver Star, which was upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 2021.
A brotherhood that no one else could ever understand.
