During the Second Gulf War, an American F-15 managed to score an air-to-air kill with a bomb.
The pilots were actually hunting Iraqi long-range missiles when they received a distress signal from special operations forces. The group was about to be overrun and Iraqi helicopters were bringing in more and more troops.
Since the original target had been missile sites, the F-15 had only heavy bombs as a payload. But the pilots had an idea: they would simply drop their 2,000-pound bomb on an Iraqi Hind that had just landed.
However, after flying an attack maneuver on the enemy helicopter and releasing the bomb at just the right moment, the radar suddenly showed that the Hind had taken off again. Nevertheless, they kept the laser on the fast-accelerating helicopter. At first, nothing happened. But then the 14-feet bomb slammed into the Hind, penetrated the metal and exploded just below it. By a stroke of luck, the helicopter had flown toward the F-15, allowing the bomb to find its target despite the limited guiding capabilities
