Navy SEAL John Dougandara and his service dog "Bart" were inseparable until they were killed in the horrific shootdown of Extortion 17.

The Chinook, with 38 passengers on board, was flying through a valley in Afghanistan on Aug. 6, 2011, to help Army Rangers who were engaged in a firefight. The passengers were primarily Navy SEALs from the Gold Squadron of the famous DEVGRU. Just before the soldiers reached their destination, the helicopter was hit by an enemy RPG and crashed. All occupants were killed and Extortion 17 became the heaviest loss of American lives in the entire Afghanistan War.

When Pathfinders reached the crash site, the handler's motionless hand was still attached to his four-legged comrade. In a helicopter crash, virtually any moving object in the helicopter becomes a hazard, so Dougandara grabbed Bart by the harness. He held him so tightly throughout the crash, right up until they hit the ground, that both were still connected when they died. They had literally spent the last second of their lives together.

A brotherhood that no one else could ever understand.
