This is what a SEAL team's hot mission looks like when an officer accidentally leaks the location and date in a press conference.
The reconnaissance team was supposed to land in Mogadishu in December 1992 to ensure the equitable distribution of UN relief supplies. But instead of hostile militia, excited reporters suddenly awaited them on the beach.
The acting task force commander himself had leaked the top-secret invasion when he said in a press conference, shortly beforehand: “I think if you go to bed tonight you might just miss something.” The statement led to more than 400 journalists waiting outside the Mogadishu airport for the SEALs, completely ruining the element of surprise.
Reporters kept joking about the busted SEALs for a long time, but what they didn't know was that from a distance, the flashbulbs looked like the operators were in the middle of a fierce firefight. The American ships were about to shell the beach with everything they had to support the SEALs, when they luckily radioed in and saved the lives of those naive reporters.
