During the legendary Battle of Camarón, 65 Foreign Legionnaires fought 2,000 Mexicans, despite being offered a surrender.
French soldiers had arrived in said town at dawn on April 30th, 1863, to secure the roads for a convoy. As they were about to rest, 2000 enemy soldiers suddenly attacked. While fighting back, the French withdrew to a Hacienda outside of town where they took up positions.
The Mexican colonel told the legionnaires to surrender, as he commanded more than 30 times as many men. However, the French swore to continue securing the convoy and vowed to fight to the last man. For the next 8 hours, they repelled every attack by the Mexicans until only 5 soldiers were left standing with no ammunition left. In this hopeless situation, the French went on a bayonet charge, finally being overwhelmed. Only now did they surrender on the condition that they be allowed to keep their weapons and treat their wounded comrades.
The courage and esprit de corps during the Battle of Camarón is regarded as a defining moment in the Foreign Legion's history.
