The "Daisy Cutter" was a conventional bomb from the Vietnam War that was so powerful that it was mistaken for an atomic bomb. At nearly 15,000 lb and 4 yards long, it was so massive that it could only be dropped from a transport plane or special helicopter.
Originally, the bomb was designed for use in the dense jungles of Vietnam. Due to its special mode of operation, it released a shock wave hundreds of yards wide, clearing away all obstacles and thus creating space for a landing zone.
It was also used in the 1991 Gulf War, but mainly for its psychological effect. Although the bomb certainly wreaked havoc, the aim was to persuade Iraqi troops to surrender quickly in the face of the tremendous detonation. An SAS unit, which was on a surveillance mission at the time and knew nothing of the drop, radioed headquarters after the explosion: "Sir, the blokes have just nuked Kuwait!"
Only in 2008 the Daisy Cutter was replaced by the even more powerful MOAB bomb.
