An EOD technician and a medic try to figure out how to remove a live RPG from their comrade's leg.
Lance Cpl. Perez was fighting in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when he was suddenly struck by an RPG piercing his thigh. Transporting unexploded ordnance in aircraft is obviously strictly prohibited, yet the crew of the rescue helicopter that was called in ignored that instruction and evacuated their comrade.
Arriving at the base, the pilots made their most careful landing ever and handed the Marine over to Lt. Cmdr. Gennari, head of the surgical company. Not wanting to put his colleagues in danger, he moved Perez to an open area in front of the hospital and personally took care of him.
At this point, the base was dead silent and a safety zone was set up around the patient. Only the medic and EOD were allowed to approach Perez. Despite the danger, they managed to safely remove the 12-inch projectile. The 20-year-old Marine survived and has celebrated his birthday twice a year ever since.
A brotherhood that no one else could ever understand.
