Franz Stigler was a German fighter pilot who spared the crew of a badly damaged American bomber and escorted them home instead.
During the attack on an armaments factory in Bremen in 1943, the Americans came under such heavy fire that they barely managed to keep their plane in the air. One of the engines failed and almost everyone on board was wounded.
As Stigler approached the badly damaged aircraft, however, he didn’t have the heart to shoot down the stricken crew. The fighter pilot had already achieved 22 aerial victories and only had to shoot down one more aircraft to be awarded the prestigious Knight's Cross. But despite this fact, he flew alongside the enemy aircraft and escorted it to the North Sea, effectively protecting it from German anti-aircraft fire. Here he saluted the American pilot, peeled off and flew back to Bremen.
Both pilots kept silent about the extraordinary incident until 50 years after the war, when they finally met in person through a newspaper advertisement. This developed into a close friendship, which only ended when both died shortly after each other in 2008.
