Teacher Math Lesson: Converting Improper Fractions & Mixed Numbers
Improper fractions are fraction with a larger numerator (top number) than denominator (bottom number), such as "twelve ninths" (12 / 9).
Mixed numbers are made up of a whole number and a common fraction, such as "two and four fifths" (2 4/5).
Each improper fraction is equal to a unique mixed number, and each mixed number is equal to a unique improper fraction. In this video I discuss how to introduce this idea to students, and to teach them to convert between these two forms in a way that emphasizes understanding.
