In my opinion, ten frames are absolutely the best resources for teaching early mathematics concepts to young children. It is a bonus that they are so cheap and easy to make for yourself.

A ten frame with counters will represent numbers 0-10 in a form that is easily recognized at a glance, without counting - what teachers call "subitizing". This is a natural skill for unordered groups up to 4 or 5, but can be extended with an arrangement of objects that allows us to think about the number (known as "conceptual subitizing"). Ten frames present just such an arrangement.

Use the downloaded flash cards in random order to give your student or child practice in instantly recognizing each arrangement. Talk to the child or children about each number, and what can be seen using the ten frame arrangement. For example, the number 7 can be see as:

an odd number
one more than 6
three less than 10
equal to three plus four
etc...
