Before learning the symbolic method for converting common fractions to decimals, they should learn what the connections are, and see why the fractions are related.
When dealing with tricky examples such as one third, students can approximate the answer by comparing a shaded third with the number of hundredths needed in a similar circle to equal the third. This can help approximate an equivalent fraction of 33/100 and a decimal of 0.33 .
Students will later learn the division method which will provide the exact answer, including recurring decimals.
