Wolves Chasing Elk
A pack of 4 wolves chases a small herd of elk in western Montana.
Where elk are present, they tend to be the preferred prey of wolves. But in the absence of elk, wolves adapt to hunting other ungulates. For example, on Isle Royale National Park, they focus on moose. In Wood Buffalo National Park, they hunt bison. And, in the upper midwestern states, wolves focus on deer.
