Video Essay On Crunch Culture and Video games
if you visit bay in God of War Ragnarok - you can find a dwarf scroll that talks about alienation of worker. But why?
The videogame industry has been abusing its workers for decades- from the early history of games to today, developers and testers are faced with crunch, exploitation and worker abuse. Crunch results in glitches, bugs, horrible storytelling.
Games like cyberpunk 2077 or redfall, as well as many others were released in un-playable state in recent years due to poor management, and terrible attempts to compensate for mismanagement using crunch.
in this video I explore history or crunch and games, and see why it may be necessary to return unionization and Marxist labour back into games and game development. I use God of War Brok and Sindri and The Elden Ring Roderika and Master Heug to outline how we see workers in games.
I talk about women in the videogame industry and the history of videogames - that highlights how cold war, misogyny, and militarisation imprinted on video game workplace culture.
