About this video essay:
Recently, Mr Beast's channel released a larger humanitarian project, curing blindness for 1000 people.
Despite seemingly good faith of his, the video collected a large amount of criticism on twitter and youtube alike towards Jimmy Donaldson and his team.
There are many issues with the video, from the exploitation of disabled people for money to a lack of self-awareness of the host to a feeble response to criticism.
But in this video is about otherness and alienation, about the history of disability and entertainment, from freak shows and circuses, to disability exploitation and poverty tourism in youtube content.
Mr beast (the biggest and the fastest growing channel on youtube) is a Barnum of our time, a generous circus owner of the poor and collector of disabled people, who are to be consumed by us as a part of the entertainment.
