Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about cheerleading.
Cheerleading is a combination of physical routines executed as a team to garner cheers from audiences in sporting events.
Gradually, it evolved into a sport of its own, where competitive events are conducted to decide a winner from a number of participating teams.
The game originated and is predominantly practiced in the United States with very little presence in a few other countries.
The objective of the game is to score more points than the opponent’s team.
Cheerleading is a team sport, where teams compete against each other in a tournament.
There are two different variants of cheerleading competitions based on the association of the team, school-sponsored and all-stars.
In school-sponsored teams are associated with middle school, high school, or college teams, and they represent their respective schools in competitions.
In an all-star competition, teams are independent entities that are purely formed just to take part in the competition.
There are different divisions for each age group.
Teams, also known as cheerleading squads are allowed 6 to 36 members of one or both genders.
In the competition, both the teams execute a routine for the duration of 2 1/2 minutes
The routine consists of several moves like tumbling, dancing, and jumping.
A panel of judges, judge each routine based on execution, synchronization, the difficulty of moves, creativity, and presentation, and award points accordingly.
In case a team makes a mistake, deductions are also made.
At the end of the round, the team with the highest points is declared as the winner.
