Nick Lavery saved the life of a fellow soldier in Afghanistan, losing his leg in the process.
On the fateful day, Special Forces planned to conduct a dismounted patrol with their Afghan partner force. Shortly after giving the order, however, one of the Afghans climbed onto a vehicle, pointed the machine gun at the Americans and pulled the trigger.
When Nick heard the shots, he saw a fellow soldier standing right in the line of fire. Instinctively, he pushed him to the ground and caught the bullets with his own body. Due to the injuries, he saw no chance of survival for himself and shouted to his comrades to take care of the other wounded. However, the special forces managed to eliminate the threat and evacuate Nick. Miraculously, he survived, but he lost his right leg.
The Army offered him the chance to leave the service with full pay, but to everyone's surprise, Nick refused. Instead, he worked his way back to Special Forces, passed all fitness tests, and became the first Green Beret to redeploy with only one leg.
