Shortly before D-Day in June 1944, a group of British SAS soldiers with hundreds of dummy paratroopers jumped over France to launch a distraction maneuver. It was one of the most secret missions in World War 2.
The special forces and their 30-inch dummy comrades were dropped off one day before the planned invasion in another area of France to simulate an attack. To the German soldiers on the ground, the dummies looked like enemy paratroopers. After landing, the SAS soldiers created as much noise as possible and even occasionally attacked German soldiers, who then believed that a real invasion was taking place. To enhance the effect, the legs of the dummy paratroopers were fitted with an impact fuse and emitted explosion sounds when they landed. During the fighting, 4 of the 6 British soldiers were captured or killed and after a while the Germans discovered the dummies, so the confusion died down. Nevertheless, they had already started moving troops to stop the false invasion, so from the British point of view, the mission was a success.
