BUSKETT GARDENS, MALTA
The Buskett Gardens are one of the very few woodland areas in Malta. In fact the name Buskett comes from Italian word Boschetto which means a 'small wood'.
What's interesting about these gardens is that they were planted by the Order of St. John in around 1500 and were used as a hunting ground. The Buskett is a garden of the Verdala Palace which was built in 1588 as a hunting lodge and summer residence of The Grandmaster. Nowadays the Verdala Palace is the presidential summer residence.
The area of over 40ha is used for recreation, picnics and walks in a nature. You can find there some very old olive trees, orange & lemon tree groves, vineyards but also Aleppo pines and palm trees.
In 2000 the Buskett Gardens were included into the list of sites falling under Special Area of Conservation and Special Protected Area acts.
I suggest to visit the gardens when going to see the Dingli Cliffs or Mdina & Rabat since they are in a close proximity.
