WALK TO ST. PAUL' S ISLAND, MALTA
This was my first time going to see the St. Paul's Island. It was back in February 2020. This time of a year in Malta is one of my favourite because there is lots of greenery are blossoming flora.
We went there by car, parked near by the Mistra Battery and started the trek. The St. Paul's Island will 'follow you' on your right hand side while following the trekking path.
I highly suggest wearing shoes with a good grip and I always take big bottle of water and some snacks because one never knows.
Be attentive to where you step and don't necessarily walk along the cliff's edge all along because of its natural erosivity. You can see that it is partially crumbled down and there are many cracks on the edges. I had quite few moments when I realised that I am actually standing on the chipped part of the cliff (oh my myyy...).
The closer to the island you get, the more photos you take :) There are plenty of opportunities to have a picnic with amazing views. Just stop for some minutes to visually explore the St. Paul's Island. You will be unable to walk all the way to the island and explore it unless you have a boat or you book a boat trip.
A statue of Paul the Apostle is a characteristic feature on the island and one can already see it from Bugibba and St. Paul's Bay (yesss, lots of places in Malta carry the name of St. Paul :)). The reason why the island carries the name of St. Paul is connected to his alleged shipwrecking which took place in 60AD, when he was on his way to Rome to be put on trial in front of Julius Ceasar. He took a refuge in a grotto (nowadays known as The St. Paul's Grotto in Rabat) and remained on the island for 3 months during which he introduced Christianity to the locals.
I didn't know about the natural limestone 'beach' therefore I am glad that I could find a new potential spot for swimming in warmer months. The key of happy swimming here is to have the 'water shoes' :)
The time you send there is pretty much depending on you. If it is a part of your hooping-exploring stop or if you wish to enjoy the tranquility for a nice half or full day.
