Staff Sergeant Daniel Busch was a Delta Force sniper and part of first Black Hawk Crew that was shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu.
The pilot had controlled his helicopter directly over the combat zone so that special forces could support the ground troops with sniper fire. In the process, the helicopter was hit by an RPG and crashed several blocks away.
Daniel was among the only two soldiers who survived the crash with just minor injuries and were able to defend the survivors. In coordination with his comrade, he positioned himself at the corner of a building at the rear of the wrecked helicopter. From there he defended the injured alone against numerous enemies who attacked from several directions. He was hit 4 times, but still managed to hold off the enemy militia just long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
Daniel succumbed to his wounds a short time later, but his efforts allowed the safe evacuation of his seriously wounded comrades. For this, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
A brotherhood that no one else will ever understand.
