Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about Field handball.
Field handball, also known as grass handball and outdoor handball is a modified version of regular handball.
The game involves players running towards the goal zone to score goals.
The basic objective of the game is to score more goals than the opponent.
The game of field handball takes place between two teams of eleven players each on a grass field of 90 to 110 meters long and 55 to 56 meters wide.
The grass field shares a lot of similarities with the field of Association Football.
The grass field has two parallel lines of 35 meters from the goal line, which actually divides the field into 3 sections.
There are two goal areas in the game, one on each end, as a semicircular line having a radius of 13 meters.
In each section of the field, there are only six players allowed.
The game begins with a jump off in the center of the court.
Once the ball comes into play, players from both teams struggle to win possession of the ball.
Players are allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body that is above the knee.
Once a player receives possession, they can pass, hold possession, or shoot.
If a player holds possession, they can dribble or take three steps for up to three seconds without dribbling.
A goal is scored when a player throws the ball into the opponent’s goal.
The goalkeeper is allowed to come out of the goal area but must not retain possession if they are outside the goal area.
The game of handball lasts for a regulation of 60 minutes which is split into two periods of 30 minutes each with a 15 minute interval.
The team that manages to score the most points in the given duration of time is declared as the winner.
