Coup is set in the Dystopian Universe, into which several games to date have been set.
The concept is intriguing: after a series of disasters the governments of the world have collapsed, and the slack has been taken up by massive corporations who rule like modern day royalty. The ranks of each card in the game can be bluffed (an ambassador can pretend to be an assassin or a captain...etc) but if the player is caught in a lie that card is lost representing the death or fall from favor of that character. With enough money from taxes or embezzling the players can also 'coup' another player, forcing them to turn over one of their cards, so it is a war of attrition despite all the negotiations going on in the early game.
Only one player can be victorious, so in a film version these corps would likewise be locked in a lethal cold war of influence and manipulation until only one reigns supreme over a bitterly divided world. I liked the idea of the internal and external conflicts being represented by the game of chess, as reflected in the royals' costumes and their towering buildings.
The game is fun and I wanted to see what it would look like as a film.
