Project Eldest Son was a secret operation during the Vietnam War to turn the enemy's weapons against themselves. For this risky tactic, American special forces snuck into Viet Cong controlled territory and left behind ammunition that matched the enemy rifles.
One round from each box was rigged so that when fired, it would explode while still in the hands of the enemy soldier to wound him. Since the pressure generated by the exploding cartridge was five times higher than usual, the sudden detonation sometimes even projected the bolt of the AK-47 into the shooter's head. Mortar shells and machine gun belts were similarly prepared, resulting in an even more devastating effect.
However, the psychological effect on the soldiers was at least as effective. Since only one round exploded at a time randomly, the Viet Cong were to be made to distrust their own weapons and ammunition supplies. From intercepted documents, the U.S. Army learned that an unusually high number of exploding weapons were indeed reported during this period. It was not until the operation came to light years later that the Viet Cong learned of the true cause.
