In April 1987, American forces wanted to learn more about Soviet helicopters. So, they simply stole one.
The Soviet-built Hind actually belonged to Libyan troops. However, they left the combat helicopter fully armed after they withdrew from the border war with their neighboring country, Chad.
When the U.S. State Department got wind of the matter, two specially prepared Chinook helicopters from the famous Night Stalkers landed in Chad in June 1988. From there, they flew nearly 500 miles in the middle of the night to the parked Hind without the Libyan Air Force noticing.
One of the Chinooks carried the helicopter itself, while the second carried the armament and attachments. Due to the heavy weight, they had to refuel three times on the way back and barely reached the airport in Chad with a sandstorm right behind them. Here, the Hind was split between two transport aircraft and flown back to the U.S. without incident.
The entire operation lasted only 67 hours and is still considered unique today.
