Meet These 3 Rules of Residence Before You Apply for US Citizenship
Before you apply for U.S. citizenship, there are generally three rules of residence to consider: continuous residence, physical presence, and district residency. The requirements of continuous residence and physical presence are interrelated but are different requirements.
🇺🇸 Continuous residence
Applicants are required to show that they have:
✅ Resided continuously in the U.S. for five years before applying
✅ Resided continuously in the U.S. for three years in the case of qualified spouses of U.S. citizens
🇺🇸 Physical Presence
Applicants are required to show that they were:
✅ Physically present in the U.S. for thirty months within the five year period before applying
✅ Physically present in the U.S. for eighteen months within the three year period before applying in the case of qualified spouses of U.S. citizens
🇺🇸 Three-Month Residency or the District Residency Rule
✅ An applicant for naturalization must file his or her application for naturalization with the state or service district that has jurisdiction over his or her place of residence. The applicant must have resided in that location for at least three months prior to filing.
‼️ Remember that each of these three residency requirements must be satisfied (unless otherwise specified) in order for the applicant to be eligible for naturalization.
