Transcript:
Homicide investigators Rust Cole and Marty Hart are called in for questioning over their murder investigation of Dora Lange in 1995. It becomes clear that the two were once close but no longer speak to each other and are both retired. This was the first case they had as partners and the victim looks like she was part of some Satanic ritual, as speculated by Rust. They chase down leads finding out the victim was a prostitute and heavy drug user, all the while we see the relationship between the two detectives deteriorate. Rust an anti religious, lonely man who spouts weird shit and Marty a family man who claims the weight of his profession drives him to cheat on his wife.
They eventually come to the conclusion that the victim Dora Lange was killed by a meth cook, they track down his location and attempt a Rogue arrest. During their attempted apprehension Marty finds that the suspect has been keeping two children in squalor to the point where one dies. He gets so upset that he shoots the suspect out of rage. Rust creates a cover up, they call in backup and are hailed as hero cops.
The two become good friends until Marty's wife discovers he is cheating and she in turn forces herself upon Rust. Marty finds out and the have a blue, part ways and never talk again.
During the interviews, the new investigators discuss a new case and allude to Cohle being the suspect all along. Having no real evidence they let Rust go and Marty claims to have no knowledge of it. They meet and agree to partner up, outside of the law, to find out what they missed. In their findings they discover that a family known as the Tuttles, who have deep ties in the region, are part of some cult. This leads them to Errol Childress who lives in a creepy run down estate out in the bayou. They chase down the clearly demented Childress, Rust engages a fight and gets injured. Marty shows up in time to shoot the suspect and save Cohle.
