Canonical tags tell Google what is the URL that should be regarded as the definitive URL when you have two or more URLs that are near identical on your website. This can happen when you have different URLS due to e-commerce filtering, or if your site has taxonomies with the same content, or if your Content Management System creates URLs under multiple directories. The canonical tag is a hint to Google to index one particular URL, to prevent dilution of similar URLs. If you have technical SEO issues, such as 301 redirects pointing at a URL when the pointing URL is the canonical, Google may use other hints, like internal or external links, to determine which URL should be the canonical.
