Typhoon Shanshan battering Kagoshima, Japan
Typhoon Shanshan continues to harass the southern islands of Japan today, and has been stalling almost in place for the last 24 hours. The storm has moved slowly northwards, and jogged eastwards earlier but appears to be back on course northwards again, towards southern Kyushu. Typhoon Warnings are in effect, and the storm has started to degrade in appearance potentially due to a new eyewall replacement cycle.
Last night, northern Amami recorded winds of 70 miles per hour gusting to 99mph as the eyewall barely cleared the islands. Yakushima and Tanegashima may not be so lucky later today as the storm presses north.
The forecast for Shanshan remains horribly uncertain, and more scenarios are depicting stalling and erratic movement of some kind, ranging from pushing westwards over the East China Sea, to a slow but gradual push northeastwards through Honshu. However, the consensus this morning is that the storm is likely to remain around Kyushu for several days and may deliver over 1200mm of rainfall.
Elsewhere, the Eastern and Central Pacific storms have mellowed, and are all at moderate tropical storm strength and not currently affecting land.
In the Atlantic, two areas of interest have a small chance of developing next week. Another storm could squeeze to the east of Shanshan later this week.
In the Indian Ocean, a storm is forming along the India/Pakistan border slightly inland, and is likely to become a tropical storm as it reaches the coast and moves west. Heavy rain of over 250mm is possible along the immediate coast of Pakistan. The storm's remnants are likely to graze Iran and move into Oman this weekend.
