Typhoon Yagi arrives in Vietnam - Tropical Weather Bulletin
Typhoon Yagi remains very powerful as it moves over the Gulf of Tonkin, and remains a Category 3 storm as it draws nearer to a historic landfall in northern Vietnam. If Yagi maintains its current category, it will become the strongest storm to make landfall along the Gulf of Tonkin coast of Vietnam, even beating the disastrous Haiphong typhoon in 1881. Yagi is also expected to become only the eighth major typhoon to make landfall in the country. Yagi has been dealing with an eyewall replacement cycle since it made landfall over Hainan, and may be starting to improve again in the short window the storm has to redevelop. Landfall is expected later today.
Elsewhere, there are still five areas of interest in the Atlantic, with increasing chances from one of the areas of interest in the Gulf of Mexico. With two disturbances converging, it's unclear as to which one will develop, if either do. In the Central Atlantic, another area of interest is brewing and could become a fairly short lived tropical storm out at sea.
In the Eastern Pacific, an area of interest could develop into a tropical cyclone off the coast of Mexico next week.
In the Western Pacific, another area of interest is likely to develop near Micronesia, and could itself become a powerful typhoon early next week as it nears Guam and the Mariana Islands.
