Hurricane Watches are in effect for parts of the Big Bend region of Florida as Tropical Depression 04L takes shape near Cuba. The system has formed further south and west than expected, leaving it more time to intensify over the boiling waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures in the area are at around 32 degrees Celsius, and rapid intensification is likely as the storm passes Tampa Bay and heads northwards. 04L will turn northeast and cross over northern Florida and Georgia, before stalling out to the east back over the Atlantic Ocean. Modelling currently suggests that the storm might stall and intensify before turning around and making landfall again near Savannah, Georgia. The forecast could still change substantially, however, and all points in Florida and up to the outer banks of North Carolina need to watch the storm closely.
Elsewhere, Hurricane Carlotta is believed to be near its peak as a strong Category 1 storm, moving out towards the west over the open Eastern Pacific. The storm is expected to gradually weaken by tomorrow, and dissipate by the end of next week.
Other areas of interest are noted in the Eastern Pacific, with three such areas all with a medium chance of development. There is no credible threat to land at this time.
