1938 New England Hurricane Documentary - The Long Island Express
Force Thirteen presents the first of its kind documentary on the New England Hurricane of 1938, one of history's most fiercest storms in the region.
The latter stages of the Great Depression and the prelude to war in Europe was the backdrop of the era, at a time where transport was being revolutionised across the United States. But Long Island, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the rest of New England weren't expecting this particular express.
The hurricane peaked as a Category 5 on the modern day Saffir Simspon Hurricane Scale, whilst it was close to the Bahamas in the Western Atlantic. The storm then raced northwards at an almost unparalelled pace, taking only one day to arrive in the New England region. The storm made landfall on Fire Island, a barrier island on the Long Island peninsula, with winds of 120 miles per hour. To this day it remains the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the area. Millions of trees fell in the New England region, amounting to six years worth of timber cuts. An estimated 800 were killed by the storm as it ravaged the coastal areas with a large field of wind and a powerful storm surge which took hold at a very rapid rate.
