Hurricane Gilma has been strengthening overnight and is now a strong Category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 miles per hour. The storm could still strengthen a little more and reach Category 4 status before weakening begins tomorrow. The storm will then head in the general direction of Hawaii, but the islands are still over 2000 miles away.
However, to Gilma's west, another storm is brewing and will probably become the first Central Pacific storm in nearly five years later today. This storm is expected to sideswipe the big island of Hawaii with tropical storm or hurricane force winds, before the larger but weaker Gilma approaches next week.
Total rainfall on Hawaii is expected to reach 4 inches from both storms.
