Super Typhoon Yagi a borderline Category 5 near China
Typhoon Yagi continues to push further south of forecast, and is aiming for the central part of Hainan island in China as a borderline Category 5 storm today. The storm's immense intensity has held up until now, and the storm may have reached Category 5 status earlier. The storm has only a few hours left to intensify before rapid weakening begins as the storm reaches Hainan. The storm will then continue through the Gulf of Tonkin and make a likely Category 2 landfall in northern Vietnam this weekend.
Elsewhere, there are now six areas of interest in the Atlantic, but none of them have a high chance of development. The best chance appears to stem from an area of interest in the main development region, which could become a weak to moderate tropical storm as it drifts northwards over open waters. Additionally, an area of interest in the western Gulf of Mexico could cause enhanced rainfall over the coastal regions of Texas, Louisiana, and northern Mexico in the next few days.
In the Eastern Pacific, an area of interest could develop into a tropical cyclone off the coast of Mexico next week.
In the Western Pacific, another area of interest is likely to develop near Micronesia, and could itself become a powerful typhoon next week as it nears the Mariana Islands.
