This $5 tool needed an upgrade.
I needed a special spanner wrench with extra long reach. I had no idea where to find one of those, so I just made my own from a cheap Harbor Freight adjustable spanner wrench and some bolts.
I removed the original studs, drilled and tapped the holes to 1/4"-20 threads, and made some custom extensions that thread in and lock with a nut. I used my lathe to turn the tips of the extensions down to size, but you can do the same thing with a grinder and a hand drill.
Now I have a fully adjustable wrench that I can easily modify next time I need a tool like this, all for $5 (+$2 for the bolts).
