Colon cancer is a disease that primarily affects the older population aged over 60. The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) has estimated that those under 50 are the only group to have seen an increase in incidence rate. The HCT-116 colorectal cancer cell line has been used for investigating colon carcinoma molecular biology and biochemical pathways involved in cellular processes such as proliferation. The HCT-116 cell line was initially established from the primary epithelial tumor tissue of an adult male. HCT-116 cells are reported to have a ras-protooncogene mutation in codon 13 and to be positive for TGF beta 1 and 2 expression. HCT-116 cells are widely used in biomedical research, and transfection studies are a pivotal part of this research.
