The Colon Cancer Alliance estimates that the colon cancer incidence rates have increased in patients under 50YO; this highlights the need for new treatment regimens. The HT-29 colorectal cancer cell line is tumorigenic and a vital tool for the novel cancer drug synthesis and evaluation. The HT-29 model was first derived in 1964 from the primary tumor of a 44-year-old female with colon adenocarcinoma. The HT29 cell line are human epithelial intestinal cells, shown to produce the Immunoglobulin A (IgA) secretory component as well as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). HT-29 cells are characterized as heterotransplantable (tumorigenic), and form well-differentiated grade 1 tumors. HT-29 cell structural components include microfilaments, microvilli, mitochondria, lipid droplets, smooth & rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) with free ribosomes, limited primary lysosomes and a number of secondary lysosomes. These cells express urokinase receptors but are without detectable plasminogen activator activity. The HT-29 cell line tests negative for CD4 and positive for expression of galactose ceramide. The HT-29 cell line is used extensively as an in vitro epithelial differentiation model, for in vivo tumorigenicity needs, and for human stomach infections.
