The mortality late from lung cancer has declined steadily due to the spread of public health awareness campaigns, however it has maintained its position as the leading cause of worldwide fatalities. Novel approaches to lung cancer treatment including immunotherapy and targeted therapies are critical for the treatment of advanced stage patients. The A549 lung cancer cell line was derived in 1972 from carcinomatous lung tissue from an aged 68 Caucasian male. A549 cells are human alveolar basal epithelial cells, adenocarcinomatic, that are classified as squamous cells and are typically responsible for diffusing substances like water and electrolytes across lung alveoli. The A549 model has been used for the investigation of various lung cancers as well as asthma and other respiratory illnesses. A549 cells are hypotriploid and synthesize keratin and lecithin with a large fraction of desaturated fatty acids using the cytidine diphosphocholine pathway.
