Altogen Biosystem's in vivo transfection reagent is chemically engineered nanoparticles of animal origin-free formulation that have been optimized for nucleic acid delivery for in vivo systems. siRNA, shRNA, plasmid DNA, and miRNA can all be used with this system.

The nanoparticles in the transfection reagent are ~100nm in size and are coated with biological polymers that form ionic interactions with negatively charged nucleic acid with positively charged nanoparticles. After administration, nanoparticle-nucleic acid complexes acumulate in target tissues and are eventually degraded via iron metabolism.

There are various organs that can be targeted via different administration routes, and a single injection can maintain sustained knockdown. Since this developed system has been optimized for safety and efficiency, there is very low observed toxicity and no detectable inflammatory response.
