In 1974, the 3T3-L1 cell line was first established from a Swiss albino Mus musculus embryo. 3T3-L1 cells exhibit fibroblast morphology and are highly similar to their parent 3T3 cell line. These cells are negative for ectromelia virus (mousepox). The 3T3-L1 model can be utilized for studying mammalian embryonic tissue or fibroblast cells. 3T3-L1 cells have a 14h doubling time and demonstrate a sensitivity to lipogenic and lipolytic drugs and hormones (i.e. epinephrine, isoproterenol, and insulin). 3T3-L1 cells undergo a pre-adipose to adipose-like transition as they rapidly progress from rapidly proliferative to heavily confluent and contact inhibited. The 3T3-L1 model is widely used for studies of adipose tissue as 3T3-L1 cells can undergo adipocyte differentiation under proper conditions.
