Hurricane Gilma is likely to become the Eastern Pacific's strongest storm of the year so far, currently strengthening at Category 2 intensity. The storm is likely to become a major hurricane later today over the open ocean. To its west, another area of interest has a high chance of development, and could get its name as it enters the Central Pacific later today. The storm may go on to threaten the southern extremities of Hawaii.
In the Western Pacific, Tropical Storm Shanshan has formed near the Mariana islands, and is currently battling windshear. The rather small storm is expected to curve eastwards and then back towards the northwest, eventually making another run at Japan as a potentially powerful typhoon.
Elsewhere, another area of interest in the eastern Pacific could form behind Gilma, and an area of interest is brewing in the Arabian Sea near the western coast of India.
