When I saw this Bikaner Dharamshala, I got an idea — why not make a story on dharamshalas?
I noticed that there isn’t just one, but many dharamshalas here, each built by different people in their own names. Some are dedicated to their gurus, some to their families, and some are named after communities or regions—like Jat Dharamshala, Gorakhnath Dharamshala, and others.
Most of these dharamshalas were built by wealthy merchants and philanthropists in earlier times. In many cases, people constructed them in memory of their fathers or grandfathers. Some dharamshalas are so old that they date back to around the 1890s.
One dharamshala was built by a donor from Amritsar, while another beautiful Rajasthani-style dharamshala was constructed in 1931 by a generous patron.
An interesting moment came when I tried to shoot inside Seth Surajmal Dharamshala, but I was not allowed. However, I noticed a photograph there which revealed that the same person who built this dharamshala also contributed to building the famous Lakshman Jhula.
Lakshman Jhula, believed to have been built around 1930, is a very important historical and religious landmark. It was constructed so that people could easily cross the river and visit temples on the other side.
Similarly, many charitable individuals have built dharamshalas in places like Haridwar, Prayagraj, and Varanasi. In Varanasi, even today, many ghats are known by the names of kings and royal families.
If you visit Haridwar, you should definitely try staying in one of these dharamshalas. Rooms are available at very affordable prices, usually between ₹500 to ₹1000.
It’s better to travel with family, especially with elders, as it increases the chances of getting a room.
So next time you visit Haridwar, stay in these old dharamshalas, experience their unique atmosphere, and don’t forget to take a holy dip in the Ganga.
