I got a chance to visit Kankhal. It is located around 2.5 to 3 kilometers from Har Ki Pauri. This place is known as the residence of King Daksha, who is believed to be the father-in-law of Lord Shiva. The famous Daksha Mahadev Temple is also located here. I came to know only recently that this place is considered Lord Shiva’s in-laws’ home.
Actually, I came here to eat at Babu Ram Chole Kulche, which is quite famous for its chole kulche. The chole here are unique because they include moong dal mixed in. You can also ask for moong dal separately. They mix everything well with spices and serve it fresh.
I initially came just for food, but when I realized the religious importance of this place, I decided to visit the temple as well.
Here, a plate costs around ₹80, which includes two kulchas and a mix of chole and dal. The taste is really good, especially because of their roasted and crushed spices. I also noticed that even the ginger was roasted, which gives a very unique flavor. Along with it, they serve hot chole gravy with tempering, which is enjoyable to sip.
I first visited this place back in 2012, and I loved the food back then as well. That memory brought me here again. Around 70% of the people who come here are tourists—especially those visiting Haridwar with their own vehicles.
If you plan to visit, try to come before 10 AM; otherwise, it gets quite crowded.
There is also Pahalwan Kachori Wala, which is very famous for its food. The shop is quite old and always crowded. Many people, especially tourists, stand in long lines to eat there.
The entire area has old, narrow lanes and feels like a traditional marketplace where you can enjoy a proper street food experience.
I spoke to the shop owner about doing a video interview, but he politely refused. He said I could record the shop but not take an interview. I felt that without his input, the video wouldn’t be complete, so I decided not to record his shop.
After that, I went about 1 kilometer ahead and reached Daksha Mahadev Temple, where I offered prayers. I spoke with a person there who explained the history of the temple.
He told me that this place is considered the in-laws’ home of Lord Shiva. King Daksha, the father of Goddess Sati (Lord Shiva’s first wife), lived here. His name is often mentioned in religious rituals, which makes this place very significant.
Although the full story is quite deep, it is believed that the origin of Shakti Peeths is also connected to this event.
After darshan, I left the temple. The temple remains open from 6 AM to 8 PM, and a grand aarti is held in the evening.
I saw many devotees praying here, and interestingly, a large number of them were from Gujarat.
