Recently, I got the opportunity to visit Chhattisgarh. This journey was to Khodri village, located near the Pendra region. In this small village of around twenty to thirty houses, I had the chance to closely witness and document a traditional tribal wedding. I had gone there with my cousin, and the entire experience deeply moved me.
The most special part of the wedding was the traditional food prepared for the wedding guests. I got the opportunity to film the entire cooking process — how rice was being cooked over wood-fired stoves in huge pots and giant woks, how vegetables were prepared, and how lentils were boiled and tempered with spices. Every ingredient was completely local and filled with rich aroma. Initially, food was prepared for around 150 people, but far more guests arrived than expected, so the cooking had to be repeated two or three more times. In the end, food was prepared for nearly 400 to 500 people.
This area is a remote tribal rural region of Chhattisgarh, where traditions are still alive with great warmth and sincerity. A day before the wedding, villagers had gone into the forest to collect large leaves. Those leaves were then stitched together to make traditional leaf plates, on which food was served to everyone. People sat on the ground in rows and ate one after another. Around ten people would sit at a time, finish their meal, and then the next group would take their place. The scene reminded me of the community langar served at a gurudwara.
When it was finally my turn to eat, we were seated respectfully and hygienically inside a traditional mud-and-tile-roof house. Since it was very hot outside, we were made to sit in the cool interior. First, our hands were washed, then leaf plates were distributed, water was served, and after that the hot meal was brought to us.
The rice there was truly special — small-grained, bright white, and incredibly delicious. It was topped with locally grown arhar dal that had a wonderful tempering of spices. Alongside it were two vegetable dishes — one made with pumpkin and peas, and the other with beans and potatoes. As the hot food was served onto the leaf plates, the fragrance of the leaves blended into the meal and enhanced its flavor many times over. Green chilies and onions were also served on the side.
Believe me, it felt as if the soul itself had been satisfied. I have rarely experienced such simple yet unbelievably delicious food. The fresh air of the forest-surrounded village, the earthy smell of the soil, the simplicity of the people, and the hot meal served on leaf plates — together, everything made this experience unforgettable.
Honestly, it made me wish I could eat food like this every single day, on the same leaf plates and in the same atmosphere. Perhaps the real taste of life is hidden in places like these.
