Haridwar is not just a place of pilgrimage, but a fascinating world filled with stories, traditions, and unique sights that most travelers often miss. During my journey there, I came across several unusual and interesting things that made this experience truly memorable.
The first thing that amazed me was the centuries-old family record books, locally known as “bahi-khatas.” These registers contain nearly 200 to 250 years of family history and are far more than simple lists of names.
Inside these books, priests have documented when families visited Haridwar, when they performed rituals, births and deaths within the family, and details of generations of ancestors who had been coming here for centuries. For many families, almost two and a half centuries of history are still محفوظ in these handwritten records.
These registers are massive, often around 500 pages long, carefully wrapped in cloth and preserved with great care. What is truly fascinating is how the priests can instantly identify which book and which page belongs to a particular family. Once opened, they can even show the names of ancestors and the exact dates of their visits.
What impressed me most was that these records are maintained not for just a few families, but for countless generations of people coming from states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Their deep spiritual connection with Haridwar has continued for generations.
Another surprising thing I saw was a unique stove that runs on diesel and used burnt mobile oil. Normally, the burnt engine oil from cars, trucks, or motorcycles is discarded as waste, but here it was being reused as fuel. In times of rising gas prices and shortages, this innovative setup appeared to work quite effectively.
I also met a man searching for gold and coins inside the river using a simple but clever setup made from pipes and mirrors. He had attached a mirror to one end of the pipe, allowing him to clearly see the riverbed while searching underwater for coins and precious objects.
Another man was diving deep into the river, trying to recover old coins and valuable items hidden beneath the water.
Nearby, one person was using a magnet tied to a rope to search for coins and metal objects in the river. He repeatedly threw the magnet into the water and pulled it back, collecting whatever metallic objects got attached to it.
I also came across a “coconut catcher,” a man who had created a basket-like net attached to a rope. He skillfully threw it into the flowing river to catch coconuts floating in the water.
Apart from this, we visited Varah Ghat, a place known for performing pind daan and ancestral rituals. Locals explained that this ghat is considered highly significant for rituals dedicated to ancestors, much like Gaya, where people traditionally perform pind daan for their forefathers.
All these experiences made this journey incredibly unique and memorable for me. Through this video, you will get to see a hidden side of Haridwar — a world filled with traditions, unusual people, and fascinating stories that most ordinary travelers never notice.
